Who must be certified?

All bartenders, servers, and waiters who handle and serve alcohol are required by the California Department of Alcoholic Beverage Control to be certified through the Responsible Beverage Service (RBS) within 60 days of hire.California AB 1221 Responsible Beverage Service training compliance became mandatory on July 1, 2022.

  2. Register for BCT’s approved ABC / RBS training course
  3. Pass the California State Exam within 30 days of completion of our course

California RBS certification process:

Step 1 - CREATE SERVER ACCOUNT
  • you must create a Server Account at the ABC website if you don’t already have one: https://abcbiz.abc.ca.gov/.
  • You will pay a $3.00 application fee, and they will assign a Server ID number.
  • The entire application must be completed and the fee must be paid in order for the Server ID number to be validated. The ID number will be listed in the server's account under the header Server Certificate Details.
Step 2 – ENROLL FOR TRAINING
  • Enroll for the BCT RBS training course.
  • When the course opens, you will need to enter your Server ID, which will be verified in real-time with the ABC.
  • You cannot start the course if the Server ID entered cannot be verified by the agency.
Step 3 - COMPLETE THE COURSE
  • Budget will upload the training record for the completed course to the ABC within 24 hours.
  • The ABC will send you an email once they receive the training verification, informing that you can now take the exam.
Step 4 - TAKE THE EXAM
  • You must take the exam within 30 days of finishing the course.
  • You must take the online alcohol server certification exam on the RBS Portal and pass with a score of 70% or higher.
  • You have up to three attempts to pass. If you do not get a passing score after three attempts, ABC requires you to retake the RBS Training course.
  • The certification exam is available in English and Spanish.
  • Certification is valid for 3 years.

NOTE: After passing the final exam, your status in your Server Account is updated as Certified and your Renewal Date will appear. There is NO printable certificate. The state considers their Server Certificate Details as their digital certificate.

The course focuses on the skills and techniques used to recognize the signs of intoxication and how to intervene to keep patrons and establishments safe. The training also covers underage drinking, ID checking, and much more.

The course is interactive with full audio narration and engaging real-world scenarios for the best user experience and information retention. It takes approximately 1.5 hours to complete and can be taken on all computer devices including smartphones, tablets, laptops, and PCs.

Once you create a BCT training account you can log in from any computer or mobile device and train anytime, anywhere.

You can log in and out of your training account and your place in the course will be saved.

The course has 4 lessons that cover the information required by the California Responsible Beverage Service.

Each lesson concludes with a multiple-choice quiz to help you prepare for the RBS Department exam. We also provide a practice exam to help you prepare for the state exam.
